What to do about
Fever is the way the body reacts to defend itself against infection. Left to run its natural course, fever can heal the body- a temperature of 102-104 F (39-40 C) can help shorten the duration of the complaint. If the temperature soars or continues for more than two days you may need to reduce it by encouraging sweating, or giving the patient cool baths or sponge baths and this is where aromatherapy helps.
Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint
Treatment to promote sweating
Add 5-10 drops of mixed lavender and tea tree essential oils (depending on the patient’s age) to a warm bath. For a sponge bath, add three to four drops of mixed lavender and tea tree essential oils to a bowl of warm water.
Treatment to soothe a fever or headache
Use three to four drops of mixed lavender and tea tree essential oil as a cool compress on the forehead and temple.
Treatment to reduce a temperature
Add two drops of lavender, one drop of peppermint, and one drop eucalyptus essential oils to a small bowl of cool (not cold) water, and sponge the body and head at hourly intervals. Soak the feet in a warm eucalyptus foot bath for 10-15 minutes with six drops of eucalyptus essential oil mixed thoroughly into the water.
